Smart phones have opened up new photographic possibilities for both professional journalists and citizen storytellers. Images produced with today’s smart phones now have sufficient quality to be published on all media platforms from digital to print. In fact, many news organizations now require reporters to take their own smart phone photos of breaking news events. This 5-hour, Saturday morning course will help you enhance your work or hobby with better smart phone pictures.Â
Photojournalist John Smock has taught this popular class many times, to journalism students and others. The fee for this workshop is $199.
10Â am
We discuss the history of technology in photojournalism and media; the techniques of composition and exposure; and the savoir faire to capture decisive moments. We learn how to conceptualize and develop an approach.
11 am
We look at some popular apps and the controversial journalistic and ethical issues relating to post-production.
12 pm
We go out on assignment to take pictures with our smart phones and put into practice the principles and techniques we have just learned.
2 pm
We present our work and partake in a group review session to learn from one another. The workshop concludes at 3:00 pm.
John Smock is a visual journalist teaching photojournalism and interactive journalism at the CUNY Graduates School of Journalism.
